History

The Mabouya Valley Co-Operative Credit Union, formally known as the La Ressource Co-Operative Credit Union, was established on 8th January 1979 and duly registered on 8th January 1980 under and in accordance with the provisions of the Co-Operative Societies Law, No. 17 of the Laws of St Lucia (1946) and the regulations made there under.

The development of the concept of credit union was initiated by a small group of persons seeking to offer some degree of financial inclusion for persons within the Mabouya Valley basin. The founders who referred to themselves as the 4 H Club (Hands, Head, Heart, and Health):  Lucas Felix, Catherine Francis, Patricia Herman, Sylvester Felix, John Felix and Stanisalaus Hippolyte.

The initial operation of the credit union was conducted on Sundays at a small rum shop opposite the La Ressource Combined School. With improved business activity, the credit union relocated to the La Ressource Mothers and Fathers group building, opposite the St Michael Parish church, where it remained until January 2010. To better serve its members, the Credit Union was relocated to Richfond, Mabouya Valley on the Castries to Vieux Fort Highway on 2nd May 2010.

However, with improved membership, the survival of the credit union required paid services for full time operations.  As such, the first paid employee was Elsa Felix. The Mabouya Valley Co-operative Credit Union now employs seven (7) staff members, with responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the business. However, the credit union continue to rely on the services of volunteers, serving in the capacity of the Board of Directors, Supervisory, Credit, Delinquency and Education Committee.
